Holocaust survivor Edward Mosberg believes it is his duty to share what happened to him, his family, and millions of other Jews during World War II. He regularly shares his story with students all over the world.Mosberg visited the office of USC Shoah Foundation this week not only to learn about the Institute’s work, but also to share his story. Wearing the blue-striped concentration camp uniform of his youth, Mosberg spoke to a group of history students and attended a private screening of the film DESTINATION UNKNOWN  produced in association with the Institute. The documentary tells his and the stories of other Holocaust survivors and how each one found different ways to overcome the deep scars that they carry. An avid philanthropist, the 92-year-old Mosberg was joined by Stephen Smith as he stopped by the office of USC Shoah Foundation founder Steven Spielberg on Friday to donate to Spielberg’s temple a two-hundred-year old Torah that was rescued by righteous gentiles in Poland.

Synopsis:

DESTINATION UNKNOWN blends intimate testimony with immersive archive to bring the stories of twelve Holocaust survivors to the screen. The film creates a seamless mosaic of first-hand accounts, rare archive from the time, and family Super 8 footage from after the war. The survivors share their memories, some for the first time, some for the last, bringing their experiences to a new generation. We see those who survived in hiding, those who fought as partisans, and those who endured camps such as Treblinka, Mauthausen and Auschwitz-Birkenau. While a few managed to escape, most had to try to find a way to stay alive until the end of the war.Their stories do not end with liberation. We see how they had to survive the chaos that came afterwards, and their attempts to build new lives.

HONG KONG | OCTOBER 26 | 2017

Art Basel releases gallery list for its sixth edition in Hong Kong

Art Basel's sixth edition in Hong Kong will feature 249 leading galleries from 32 countries, presenting work ranging from Modern masterpieces of the early 20th century to the most contemporary work by both established and emerging artists. 28 galleries will participate in the Hong Kong show for the first time, including important galleries from the United States and Europe, as well as a younger generation of galleries from Asia. The show will also feature strong presentations by galleries from Asia that have graduated into the main sector of the show, reflecting the further strengthening and broadening of the art scenes across Asia. Art Basel, whose Lead Partner is UBS, takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from Thursday, March 29 to Saturday, March 31, 2018.

The sixth edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong will feature a line-up of prominent returning galleries, who this year will be joined by 28 first-time exhibitors, including 14 with exhibition spaces in Asia and the Asia-Pacific region: Asia Art Center with spaces in Taipei and Beijing; Capsule Shanghai, Don Gallery and MadeIn Gallery from Shanghai; Dastan’s Basement from Tehran; Gallery Baton from Seoul; Gallery Espace from New Delhi; Gow Langsford Gallery from Auckland; Johyun Gallery with spaces in Busan and Seoul; Maho Kubota Gallery from Tokyo; Mori Yu Gallery with spaces in Kyoto and Tokyo; Öktem&Aykut from Istanbul; Tarq from Mumbai and Wooson from Daegu.

Once again, Hong Kong will be strongly represented at the fair with 24 galleries having an exhibition space in the city. This year's edition also sees a particularly strong line-up of galleries from India across all sectors of the fair, including Chemould Prescott Road, Experimenter, Nature Morte and Vadehra Art Gallery in Galleries; Gallery Espace and Sakshi Gallery in Insights; and Jhaveri Contemporary, GALLERYSKE and Tarq in Discoveries.

Galleries, the main sector of the show, will present the highest quality of painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography, video and editioned works by 196 leading international galleries. Balice Hertling returns after a brief hiatus while nine galleries that have previously participated in the show's proposal-based sectors, Insights and Discoveries, will now present their program in the show's main sector, including: 1335Mabini, Sabrina Amrani, Artinformal, Carlos/Ishikawa, Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Ink Studio, Leeahn Gallery, Gallery Side 2 and This Is No Fantasy + dianne tanzer gallery. For the full gallery list, please visit artbasel.com/hongkong/galleries.

Insights will feature presentations by one or two artists with exceptional historical materials and strong thematic exhibitions by 28 galleries. This unique sector illustrates Asian art history by presenting works of important artists from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. Highlights in this sector include a historically significant exhibition by Asia Art Center featuring works by pioneers of Taiwanese Modern art under the Cold War era, Chu Weibor (b. 1929) and Fong Chung Ray (b. 1934). Entitled ‘Shattered Jade’, Bank will showcase a project by Chinese artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) that comprises pocketsize wood engravings made during the transition from the Cultural Revolution to the subsequent reforms. Gow Langsford Gallery will present a selection of significant post-war artworks by New Zealander Colin McCahon (b. 1919, d. 1987), who dedicated his lifelong artistic practice to exploring the concerns between land and spirituality, life and death, as well as the politics between the Maori natives and the Pakeha immigrants from the 1970s. Representing prints of a different genre, Japanese artist Yurie Nagashima (b. 1973) will exhibit vintage photographs of her family members posing nude as an inquiry into her identity as a woman at Maho Kubota Gallery.

At Sakshi Gallery, ‘City – Fifth Investigation’ is a project by Indian artist Vivek Vilasini (b. 1964) comprising 31 translucent rice paper sheets that were exposed to dust and atmospheric pollution in New Delhi, addressing climate change and the pollution our generation has caused. A site-specific installation entitled ‘SKIN’ by Korean artist Anna Han (b. 1982) includes a series of paintings and installations that explore the notion of time and space at Gallery Baton. A solo exhibition of Taiwanese artist Wu Chi-Tsung (b. 1981) by Galerie du Monde will exhibit two site-specific installations and a large cyano-collage painting specially created for the show. Zilberman Gallery will present Pakistani artist Aisha Khalid’s (b. 1972) intricate Islamic geometric motifs that investigate themes of gender and domesticity in Pakistan. For the full gallery list, please visit artbasel.com/hongkong/insights.

Discoveries, focused on solo shows by emerging artists, this year will feature 25 galleries. Highlights include Timur Si-Qin (b. 1984), whose virtual reality installation ‘Depolarization,’ presented by Société, beckons viewers into a simulated natural environment to pursue a spiritual relationship to matters such as truth, epistemology and climate change. At mor charpentier, Colombian artist Carlos Motta's (b. 1978) sculptures and photographs confront our preconceived notions of the natural and the unnatural. Hong Kong artist Morgan Wong (b. 1984) will transform A+ Contemporary’s booth with a semantic-filled installation comprising of blinking neon text and absurdly proportioned cheaply-made gold-plated wristwatches, continuing his exploration into the irrepressibility of time. At ROH Projects, Indonesian artist Faisal Habibi‘s (b. 1984) work will question the distinctions between sculpture, paintings and of art itself. At Various Small Fires, American artist Jessie Homer French (b. 1940) will present paintings of Western flora and fauna embedded within an allegorical and agricultural context, which were inspired by the artist’s rural life. Ali Kazim (b. 1979) will present an immersive installation inspired by his hometown of Lahore, resonating with the current political situation in Pakistan, presented by Jhaveri Contemporary. Artist duo ‘Pors & Rao’ will present a digital interactive booth at GALLERYSKE, continuing their survey on the autonomous side of human behavior. The BMW Art Journey will once more be awarded to an artist from this year's Discoveries sector. For the full gallery list, please visit artbasel.com/hongkong/discoveries.

Several exhibitors will also show work by their artists in Art Basel's project-based sectors: Kabinett, dedicated to curated exhibitions within the galleries' booths; Encounters, once more curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director of Artspace in Sydney; and Film, curated by Beijing and Zurich based curator, multi-media artist and producer Li Zhenhua. Further details on these sectors, as well as the Conversations program will be available in the coming months.

Art Basel is also working closely with key cultural organizations across the city, including Asia Art Archive (AAA), Para Site, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 1a space and M+, Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture, offering an associated program onsite and throughout Hong Kong during the week of the show. Following the collaboration with HKADC for the Venice Biennale in 2017, the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority will present Samson Young’s solo exhibition, which returns from Venice to Hong Kong and will be on show at the M+ Pavilion from February 9 to May 6, 2018. H Queen’s, a new building in Central, which will house many galleries including the first Asia branches for several international galleries and the South Island Cultural District, will once again hold a special Art Day in March and 2018 will also see the opening of Tai Kwun, a new center for heritage and art run by Tobias Berger.

Reflecting a long-term commitment to the local art scene, Art Basel continues to support the annual Hong Kong Art Week organized by the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association, taking place from November 15 to November 26, 2017.

Sacred Dialogue, Glenn Aparicio Parry VOICE OF THE EARTH Cross-Cultural Dialogue Circle October 28th & 29th, 2017

Sacred Dialogue

I am back in New Mexico and preparing to do another dialogue circle on Climate change with Taos Institute of Noetic Sciences tomorrow, Wednesday, the 25th at 11am, followed by an exciting weekend of dialogue and ceremony with Mamo Calixto of the Columbian Aruhaco tribe beginning Saturday, October 28th at 9am. This may be the last Newsletter for a while, as I will then be signing off to write the book Sacred Politics for the rest of the autumn and winter.

In case someone does not know about the Mamos (sacred priests) of Columbia, I want to share a bit of their story. The Mamos of the Kogi and Arhuaco tribes of Columbia are chosen at birth to remain in a cave for nine years while they develop powers of extrasensory perception and become the seers/healers for their tribe. I have had the blessing to meet several Mamos in the past couple of years, and they all have blown me away with the depth of their caring and compassion for Mother Earth and all her creatures (including humans). I was happy to learn that, for the Mamos, dialogue is a very important part of their life practice. At various crossroads, they retreat to the cave for further dialogue. I feel incredibly blessed to co-facilitate a dialogue with Calixto, who lives in this manner.

For me, too, dialogue is sacred. I feel this even more than ever in this age of partisan political rancor. Dialogue is not just a symbol; it is a necessity. Dialogue affords us a great opportunity for people to practice becoming of one mind – to observe one’s thoughts while seeing another person open their mouth and say exactly what you were thinking -- to experientially realize we are all one.
Back Row: Joseph Murphy; Andrew Cameron Bailey, Glenn Aparicio Parry
Front Row: Susan Kaiulani Stanton, Sister Anele Heiges; Linda Candlish; Norma Pezzini, Connie Baxter Marlow

Ever since returning from Menla, where I co-facilitated a workshop with Susan Kaiulani Stanton, I have been counting my blessings. To facilitate dialogue circles and dream groups is a great privilege. To collaborate with Susan Kaiulani Stanton on these is a double blessing; and to have such wonderful participants I was thrice blessed. Susan and I will be doing several more workshops together: in Taos next June, and in Menla (Phoenicia, NY) again in either late September or late October.

I hope to see you in Taos or Santa Fe in the next few days.

Blessings,

Glenn

VOICE OF THE EARTH Cross-Cultural Dialogue Circle

October 28th & 29th, 2017 (Introductory Session, October 26th)
at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe
Mamo Calixto Suarez Villafane

Our world has changed. Much of what we knew and believed no longer makes sense or works in the world that is now emerging. What can we do? Do we need a new worldview?

Here is an opportunity to do just that.

Voice of the Earth is led by two outstanding dialogue leaders, - one Indigenous, one a local well-known author.  Mamo Calixto Suarez Villafane, an elder (Mamo) from the Sierra in Colombia and Glenn Aparicio Parry, PhD, the author of the seminal book “Original Thinking’, inspired by dialogue circles between Indigenous elders and Western scientists.

Dialogue circles are places where we can foster deep listening, explore assumptions, perspectives and beliefs that no longer serve us, and allow the space for fresh and original insights to emerge.

Like every species on this earth, we must abide by the rules of the ecosystem that sustains us —these laws and feedback cycles have not been suspended on our behalf. We have become aware of our vulnerability as a species, increasingly so with each new extreme weather event, whose sheer force and frequency are beyond the established scales. And yet, we hold on to the fallacy of unlimited growth in a finite system.

Worldviews, after all, are beliefs that were learned and chosen.

Can we hear in a New Way? Can we Learn in a New Way?

As well as the themed exhibition ‘Home is where the heart is’, there will be a specially curated photography exhibition featuring limited edition prints donated by David Byrne, Terry O’Neill, Helena Christensen and Derrick Santini. Hassan Hajjaj, whose stunning solo exhibition ‘La Caravane’ opened at Somerset House during Frieze week, to coincide with the 1:54 African contemporary African art fair, has donated a diptych print. Also featured are an exclusive portrait of Prince by Mike Ruiz, donated by Prince’s former Manager Kiran Sharma, a Patron of Arms Around the Child, who commented: “This is such a great photo and one Prince loved. We used it as he lead image on the Welcome2America Tour and it was on billboards in Time Square and well... everywhere. I have proudly had this limited edition piece in my care since then and am now donating it to the Arms around the child art auction to help our children. Signed by the photographer, Mike Ruiz is a remarkable artist, photographer, friend and Prince enjoyed working with him for years. They seemed to totally get one another creatively.”
Two Michael Thompson portraits from a 2010 Arms Around the Child “I Am African” campaign to provide anti- retroviral medicine to HIV+ children are featured, of the charity’s global Ambassador Iman, and her late husband David Bowie: http://www.keepachildalive.org/i_am_african/i_am_african.html
Another highlight of the exhibition is Rob and Nick Carter’s ‘Paint Pigment Photograph’ from their Cibachrome series of unique action photos inspired by the Hindu festival of Holi, capturing paint pigment spontaneously thrown in the air.
Many of the artists have created new work especially for Arms Around the Child, or donated work that fits perfectly with the theme of ‘Home is Where the Heart is”. The exhibition features artworks in several media including sculpture such as Alastair Mackie’s ‘Untitled (heart)’, 2007, a sculpture of a heart created from a modified wasp nest. Mackie re-pulped a single wasp nest and cast it into a mould taken from an anatomical model of a human heart. ‘Untitled (heart)’, is the only remaining artist proof, the others from the edition are in the Damien Hirst, David Roberts and Wellcome Collections.

Pure Evil has donated an artwork aptly named ‘EU Break-Up Nightmare, Romulo Celdran has created a hyperreal drawing of a red heart-shaped lollipop; and Diego Fortunato has given an abstract wall piece.

The auction and exhibition have been organized to raise funds towards a home for orphans who are HIV+, and to support the work of Arms Around The Child looking after children living in extreme adversity in Africa and India.
