EMILY MASON (American b. 1932)

Born in New York in 1932, Emily Mason comes from a long line of distinguished artists. Her mother, Alice Trumbull Mason, was an influential participant in the early days of American abstraction and a descendant of the famous history painter John Trumbull.

Upon graduation from the Cooper Union, Mason received a Fulbright Grant to study in Italy, travelling there with her fiancé, the painter Wolf Kahn. For the next 10 years, Rome was to become a second home for the couple. Her first solo exhibition in New York was at the Area Gallery in 1960. The gallery, founded by painter Ed Moses, was one of several artist-run spaces on East 10th Street, representing the avant-garde in New York in the late 50s and early 60s.

Writing in The Brooklyn Rail, publisher and critic Phong Bui describes Mason's position between abstract expressionism and color field painting, noting: "She was interested in neither the former’s existential angst nor the latter’s use of absorbed color pigments on raw canvas (she paints on primed canvases). By allowing painterly gestures to coexist with thin, poured layers in a wide range of colors in all manner of hues and saturations, Mason is able to amplify her colors—which are infused with forms that derive from both memory and free association with concrete surroundings in nature—while embracing their complex tonalities."

This multi-focused exhibition presented by Dorothy De Rubeis - the most extroverted Italian gallery owner – presents an intriguing mix of hallmark pieces and new works and is set to become the Artistic Event of Summer on Lake Como.

Fire on the Water is a celebration of the many forms of Italian creativity, including poetry, painting, theatre, fashion, and music. Such complete, multi-faceted, engaging and glamorous artistic events are rarely seen in Italy.

Curator Emanuela Catalano describes the exhibition as “a frame surrounding the figurative art from Maestro Lorenzo Chinnici.”

The goal of the event is to create an unforgettable memory of MADE IN ITALY. Rather than art being confined in solemn, lifeless exhibitions that don’t engage the public, Fire on the Water aims to create a dialogue with the observer and give the art work the glamour it deserves.

FIRE ON THE WATER

The event will be illuminated by the colours of Lorenzo’s paintings, which speak of humanity in opulent yet defeated forms, and the art photography of Nini Ferrara, whose work depicts precise portraits of humanity.

The creativity and the strength which have brought to us the birth of MADE IN ITALY are represented in these pieces.

Live performances will feature high fashion models showcasing dresses created specifically for this exhibition by Katerina Budnikova and inspired by Master Lorenzo Chinnici's paintings.

An enchanting piano will accompany the magnificent voices of Soprano Anna Gorbachyova and the Tenor Rodolfo Maria Bordini who will sing melodies of the Italian Masters. Jazz singer Beatrice Zanolini will remind the audience that with only seven signs of a pentagram, creativity can give rise to endless, infinitely different music combinations.

Poetry readings by Nini Ferrara and Giusy Nicosia will remind us of the delicacy and beauty of words, which can act as a soothing balm for the spirit of the listener.

As in "La Grande Bellezza" of Sorrentino, this artistic meeting - which also has gained the interest of FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) - will celebrate an incredible number of protagonists to create a truly Beautiful Event.

Ampellio Ramaioli, director of this production, has curated everything down to the last detail with the collaboration of Domenico Parisi and his staff at Six Inch. In addition, the owner of the famous Cantina Valenti will be present in order to raise a glass and host a toast with all the guests. He will be at the disposal of the public to showcase and discuss his purple nectar in detail.

We would like to acknowledge and thank World Fashion Channel TV – our official partner for the event.

PRODUCED BY | Jared Martin, Fred Roos
SCREENPLAY BY | Robert J. Mrazek

SYNOPSIS | Congressman Charlie Winship (Treat Williams) is at a crossroads in his life both personally and professionally. After he publicly refuses to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance he finds himself in a downward spiral. From being badgered by the media to being undermined by conniving lobbyist, Laird Devereaux (George Hamilton), Charlie needs to find a way out of this series of unfortunate events. He embarks on a journey with his Chief of Staff, Jared (Ryan Merriman) to a small remote island of the coast of Maine, where he comes into contact with an offbeat group of constituents who are fighting to protect their island and livelihood.

Through experiencing a different way of life Charlie is re-introduced to the ideals that molded him. Making the choice to go toe to toe with his past may give him a second chance at personal happiness, professional enlightenment, and perhaps, even a lifetime supply of lobster.

USB Bank, Basel Report 2016

13 June 2016

UBS and Art Basel announce collaboration on The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report by renowned cultural economist Clare McAndrew

UBS’s interactive public “Planet Art Lounge” in Hall 1 at the 2016 edition of Art Basel engages audiences with the firm’s global art projects through custom film content, artist-designed tattoos and a coffee bar with specially commissioned sweetener by artist Sean Raspet.

Zurich / Basel, 13 June 2016 – UBS, global Lead Partner of Art Basel, celebrates the opening of the 2016 edition of the Basel show with the announcement of The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report by Clare McAndrew, which will establish the global standard for art market research and become a new benchmark for the international art trade. The results of the first report will be published in March 2017, to coincide with Art Basel in Hong Kong. The annual report will regularly cover all of the main macro-economic trends and deliver fundamental data on the art market as a whole. Furthermore, it will drill down into specific areas of interest and new business developments for collectors and professionals.

UBS is also pleased to be able to continue its support of Art Basel into the next decade, a testament to both organizations' shared aspiration of creating a global platform for the exchanges that drive the art world forward, and the development and promotion of the visual arts. UBS has been supporting Art Basel in Basel, one of the world's most influential art fairs, since 1994. UBS expanded its partnership to include Art Basel in Miami Beach in 2002 and Art Basel in Hong Kong in 2014.

“Art Basel is a center of gravity for the art world where we can actively bring together our clients, guests and partners to see the world’s premier galleries, artworks and artists," said Jürg Zeltner, President, UBS Wealth Management. “And our joint venture to produce The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report complements our leading position in financial research and analysis across the globe, as well as our in-house Art Market Review and bespoke client offerings through the UBS Art Competence Center."

The UBS Art Collection
In the UBS VIP Lounge in the Collector’s Lounge at Art Basel, Mary Rozell, Global Head of the UBS Art Collection, has curated a display that celebrates a distinguished chapter of the UBS Art Collection’s legacy and presents some of its most significant works of art. Dating from the 1960s to the early 1990s, this group of seminal works – paintings, drawings and works on paper – spans the arc of Abstract Expressionism through Pop Art and beyond, juxtaposing portraiture with formal geometric and gestural abstraction. Artists featured include Richard Artschwager, Chuck Close, John Currin, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Brice Marden, Alex Katz, and Gerhard Richter, and a recent acquisition by Doug Aitken. Some of the works presented in the lounge are part of a UBS promised gift to The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The UBS Art Collection is the cornerstone of UBS’s commitment to contemporary art and part of its heritage and corporate culture. It comprises 30,000 works of art, including paintings, photographs, drawings, prints, video art and sculptures by emerging talents to some of the most important artists of the last 50 years. The works are on view in more than 720 UBS offices in 54 countries and shared with the public through museum loans and exhibition tours.
