RUBY RUMIÉ HÁLITO DIVINO - DIVINE BREATH

NOHRA HAIME GALLERY

RUBY RUMIÉ
HÁLITO DIVINO - DIVINE BREATH

September 10 - October 18, 2014

RUBY RUMIÉ: CROWNED CUPULA, 2014
1,300 figures in zamac with gold semi-matte patina, steel and acrylic base, 11.81 x 30.71 in. diam.  30 x 78 cm. diam.

HÁLITO DIVINO - DIVINE BREATH, Ruby Rumié's newest project, will be on view at Nohra Haime Gallery from September 10 to October 18, 2014.

The exhibition is a result of a workshop conducted in 2013 in the neighborhood of Getsemani, in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, where the artist is originally from. The project focuses on the experiences of 100 women between the ages of 18 and 72, who have been victims of domestic violence.  HÁLITO DIVINO - DIVINE BREATH uses pain and trauma to create and express, restore and heal.

At the beginning of the workshop, each participant chose one of 100 white pots arranged for them. They then exhaled their pain inside the pot, as an intimate and individual exercise that culminated the experience of breath as a force of life. At the end, the pots were sealed and marked with the initials of each participant, a symbolic gesture to encapsulate their pain. Each of them was given the figure of a woman, cast using the ancestral lost-wax technique, as an amulet, a token symbolizing her participation.

The exhibition reflects the three phases of the project: photographs of the white pots used in the workshop, black pots representing a stage of mourning, and 32 pots of different sizes crowned by delicate gold metalwork resembling the amulets the women received as a symbol of their rebirth.

Ruby Rumié has continued her questioning of the artist's commitment to society, putting herself in a position where she deeply assimilates the information given by her interviewees, and looking for a creative way of managing social and psychological issues. The whole experience included interdisciplinary round tables that dealt with this issue.

Born in Cartagena de Indias, Ruby Rumié studied in the School of Fine Arts of Cartagena de Indias. She has held major exhibitions in Colombia: Bogotá, Barranquilla, Cartagena; Santiago de Chile; Miami; New York; Washington D.C.; Rouen; Paris. Rumié recently participated in the international section of the First Biennial of Contemporary Art, Cartagena de Indias. She currently lives and works in Cartagena, Colombia and Santiago, Chile.

Sabina Streeter's portraits in charcoal and mixed media feature the mid-19th Century whaling captains who reigned as the financial, political and cultural leaders of most of the eastern seaboard in their day. ROSE MCGOWAN'S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT

DAWN

TO HAVE OSCAR © QUALIFYING RUN IN LOS ANGELES

"Best be described as Douglas Sirk-meets-David Lynch" - Chris O'Falt, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
"Provocative...slowly seductive" - Betsy Sharkey, LA TIMES
Read The Hollywood Reporter Exclusive HERE!

(New York | August 27th, 2014)  RSA/Black Dog Films announced today that after the critically acclaimed world premiere at Sundance Film Festival, the taut directorial debut from Rose McGowan, DAWN, will have an Oscar © qualifying run in Los Angeles at the Downtown Independent startingSeptember 19th.  As mentioned in The Hollywood Reporter, which you can see here, throughout the week the short film will be accompanied by seven features, one per night, curated by McGowan at the first annual "Dawn Festival".
"I'm curating a festival of directors that have given their lead women a strong voice.  These stories could have been told with men in the title characters, but these directors showed us what happens when you break stereotypes.  They have inspired me as a woman, as a director and as a person", said Rose.

Realizing that her passion lies in filmmaking, Rose McGowan's breakthrough directorial debut, DAWN, is a disturbing tale of a young girl's budding sexuality and one's desire to experience the unknown.  Dawn (Tara Barr) is a quiet young teenager living in Kennedy era America who longs for something or someone to free her from her sheltered life. When she strikes up an innocent flirtation with the boy who works at her local gas station (Reiley McClendon), she thinks that he is perhaps the answer to her teenage dreams. Though when she invites the boy and his friends into her otherwise cloistered world, she gets a lot more than she bargained for.

Carefully chosen by McGowan, the films that will accompany DAWN feature iconic performances by actresses that prove rich, complex and layered roles can and should be written for and by women.  The following films will screen with Rose McGowan and special guests in attendance:

SAFE - "Todd Haynes directed Julianne Moore in a haunting study of a woman's life."
THELMA & LOUISE - "Ridley Scott directed two substantial actresses in two substantial, inspiring roles."
HAROLD AND MAUDE - "Hal Ashby directed Ruth Gordon.  Two creatives on a creative journey."
SIXTEEN CANDLES - "John Hughes directed Molly Ringwald.  He made a teen's hopes and hurts real."
ROSEMARY'S BABY - "Roman Polanski directed Mia Farrow in a virtuoso breakdown performance."
SILKWOOD - "Mike Nichols directed Meryl Streep and Cher.  They showed us women can change the world by finding their voice."
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS - "Jonathan Demme directed Jodie Foster.  She showed us what a person can do when they go forward despite their fear."

 – Houston, TX – Art Market Productions is excited to announce the return of the Texas Contemporary Art Fair for its fourth year at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center from September 4 – 7, 2014.

Having these partners exhibit alongside our art dealers is part of what makes Texas Contemporary a uniquely Houston event.

We are very excited to showcase a full schedule of curated programs and events throughout the duration of the fair. Texas Contemporary will feature a timely series of presentations created in collaboration with our participating galleries, artists and cultural partners. LUIS GONZÁLEZ PALMA RETROSPECTIVE OPENS INAUGURAL SEASON OF LISA SETTE GALLERY MIDTOWN

Luis Gonzalez Palma
Luis González Palma
An Intimate Complicity: Luis González Palma’s 20 Years of Looking Beyond

Exhibit
October 18 - December 31, 2014

Opening Reception
Saturday October 18th from 7:00-9:00pm
I am deeply interested in how images are articulated in our minds, as what we call reality. My works are an interpretation of that reality, a reality full of stories, memories, crossed paths... They are remnants, left over from a fragmented world and dreamed into being.
—Luis González Palma

Lisa Sette Gallery is proud to present a 20 year retrospective of the works of Luis González Palma commemorating the season opening of the gallery’s expansive new space, and its recently-announced exclusive North American representation of González Palma.
A Guatamalan photographer who has been exhibiting internationally for nearly three decades, González Palma’s photo-collaged portraits superimpose Latin American and European spiritual and artistic traditions, and mine the complex relationship between the observer and observed in contemporary photography.
González Palma employs a range of exotic photographic techniques to achieve his works’ startling, aqueous effect: gelatin silver processing, gold leaf and resin inclusions, Kodalith prints, or, in recent works, inserting stark blades of acrylic paint that cleave the images’ otherwise serene aspects. González Palma is known for leaving true the whites of his models eyes, which glint eerily from a sea of dusky sepia.
Many of González Palma’s works are portraits of performers who are of Mayan descent, as is the artist himself. They peer out at the viewer with a frank, numinous, and strangely impassive mien, foregrounded against a constellation of symbol and metaphor—an Elizabethan ruff, for example, or a set of statuary wings. González Palma’s intention is to create a subconscious connection between model, artist and viewer, bringing each together in the fraught, sensuous moment of looking:
I think the photographer does not give dignity to the models, but dignity exists within them, and the photographer can become a link, allowing for a complex relationship between the model image (not the model) and the public. There’s a great collaboration, an intimate complicity, between photographer and model—it is necessary to generate an intensity that is not seen but rather “felt” in the image.
Möbius, González Palma’s latest body of work, juxtaposes the early 1900’s concretist/rationalist movement in Latin American art with the midcentury streak of intense nostalgia—also known as magical realism. To do so, González Palma intersects his romantic, sepia-toned portraits with striking geometrical arrangements in primary acrylics.
My aim with “Möbius” is to create works that allow for a new dialogue between my photographs, usually portraits loaded with emotion and subjective intensity, with abstract geometric painting elements referencing Latin American concretism… providing a rereading of the visual history of ideas from this side of the world, from its history and its contradictions.
Staged in Lisa Sette Gallery’s stunning new Al Beadle-designed desert-modernist space, a subterranean gem in midtown Phoenix, and echoing some of the gallery’s ongoing concerns with the timeless aesthetics of emotion, romance and danger as they are experienced in contemporary life, An Intimate Complicity promises to be a fitting fall-season inauguration of the gallery’s impressive new location, and an unflinching plunge into the dreams and history of the New World.

To request high resolution images, please contact us at (480) 990-7342 or use the email Ashley Rice at sette@lisasettegallery.com.
Throughout three trailblazing decades, Lisa Sette has remained committed to discovering and exposing original, intriguing forms of expression. Lisa Sette Gallery exhibits painting, sculpture, photography, installation and performance pieces from an impressive roster of emerging and established artists, as well as maintaining a clientele of local and international collectors devoted to its founder’s adventurous curatorial vision.
