Uneasy feelings about becoming a father and an adult cause Henrik to act out in hilariously inappropriate ways in this offbeat comedy. On the one hand, he wants to ignore adulthood and spend time fooling around with his friends. On the other, he must grow up and make his relationship with Tone, the mother of his unborn child, work…The Almost Man comically tells a tale of one man’s long road towards maturity, and how hard it can be for some individuals to face the prospect of growing up.
– Joe Keenan , CINEQUEST catalogue

“A charmingly realistic portrait of the dogged, insistent clamp many of us try to retain on those carefree days of young adulthood…touching…incredibly astute…vibrant…a breath of fresh air.”
– Nicholas Bell, Ioncinema.com

Cine-World Film Festival - Nov. 4, 6 & 10
IT’S ALL SO QUIET
dir. Nanouk Leopold/ Netherlands, Germany/ 93 min.
Opening Night Selection – Panorama, Berlinale; Best Feature – Torino GLBT Film Festival; Grand Jury Award for Outstanding International Dramatic Feature Film – Outfest; Silver Q Hugo – Chicago International Film Festival; Official Selection – Frameline

Helmer, a single farmer in his fifties, lives with his aged, bedridden father in the Dutch countryside. His working days are marked by the visits of milk collector Johan, a man of his own age for whom Helmer holds a secret fascination. One day Helmer decides to renovate the house, buying himself a new double bed and moving his father upstairs. His life gains even more momentum, when adolescent farmhand Henk comes to help him out.

“Leopold's careful staging of the scenario contains shades of Carlos Reygadas' similarly lyrical and country-set Silent Light. In both movies, nature takes on definition as a palpable force with greater substance than the precise demons haunting each character. Stillness dominates, from the first shots of cornfields at sunrise to the final one that finds Helmer lying among them. When It's All So Quiet comes full circle, the title is virtually an understatement.”
– Eric Kohn, indiewire

Cine-World Film Festival - Nov. 1, 2 & 9
ONCE UPON A TIME VERÔNICA
dir. Marcelo Gomes/ Brazil/ 91 min.
Best Film, Best Actress – Amazonas Film Festival, Brazil; FIPRESCI Award – FICG Guadalajara; Special Mention – San Sebastian Intl. Film Festival

Verônica is fresh out of medical school. It’s a crucial time in her life, a period filled with doubts and important decisions to be made: tough career choices, her intimate bond with her ailing father, and her active but chaotic love life. Verônica must deal with all of them as she tries to cope with the adult life that lies ahead.

Once Upon a Time Verônica is a fairy-tale in reverse. There are no fairy godmothers, no weddings, and no dreams. Verônica’s story reveals itself through adventures, misfortunes, desires and songs.

“A superbly sensual character study of a young woman navigating emotional and professional crossroads…built around a stunning central performance.”
– Neil Young, The Hollywood Reporter
